Scott & Shannon McGlon's Story:
Humble Beginnings In 1998 — Often an end becomes another beginning. Corporate America and a presentation to the Board of Directors had more impact on Scott than the company for which he was working. A significant increase in profits with minimal investment could be realized - it was received with little enthusiasm in a traditional, old-school industry. Undeterred, Scott turned the presentation into the McGlon's first business plan. Within months, Scott & Shannon had converted their third-car garage outside Houston, TX into a dispatch office with their first employee. Thus began their journey as an entrepreneurs. There were challenges to be sure - long days, working weekends, and family sacrifices launched Integrated Transport Logistics, Inc. (ITL). Scott & Shannon quickly realized the level of devotion and passion it was going to take to make their new company successful. Within 18 months, ITL was a full-fledged business and well on the way to consistent, double-digit, annual growth realized over ITL's first decade in operation. In March of 2012, the McGlon's completed their first exit with the sale of ITL. Their first start-up produced 14 successful year's and created an entrepreneurial blue-print of processes & beliefs the McGlon's would use many times over.
For two people who had grown up in the middle-class, the initial entrepreneurial success was exhilarating, validating and somewhat surreal. Not everyone is fortunate and blessed to build success on their own without ever borrowing a dime. However, the benefit of working everyday to fulfill your own goals and objectives is exciting, liberating, and empowering.
In 2004, the McGlon's launched Online Commerce Group, LLC (OCG) to bring Scott's logistics based e-commerce experience to a much larger platform. At OCG, the main focus was branding and marketing through search engine optimization and perfecting mass-customization through a suite of web-based proprietary platforms to execute custom textile based products online. With over 280 websites live at one point and a lot of trial & error, six of those sites ended up being the backbone of OCG's multi-million dollar success. OCG created a few spin-offs including a retail venture (Elegance Outdoors) and a textile manufacturing division, ARC Manufacturing, LLC. OCG became the McGlon's second exit in early 2014 to pursue other opportunities and to start giving back to early-stage startups.
In 2006, Integrated Transport, LLC was formed as a tier-one transportation provider through Panalpina for the new Hyundai Motor Manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama. An asset-based transportation business, it was built from the ground-up and was second-to-none in both safety and on-time performance in one of the most demanding industries. Just-in-Time (JIT) and Just-In-Sequence (JIS) requirements were executed without fail. The differentiating factors included very strong operating standards and training programs the competition simply could not duplicate. The fleet quickly grew from six drivers to a peak of 47 in 2008. The company was dissolved in 2010 due to expired contracts with Hyundai and to get ready for the initial prep work in exiting two of McGlon's bigger businesses, ITL (2012) and OCG (2014).
In June 2007, McGlon Properties, LLC was formed and today the McGlon's enjoy the fruits of their hard work from all of the companies they have started and grown. From 1998 through 2021, the McGlon's have employed over 400 people in nine different companies started from inception that generated over $112 million in gross sales. From supply chain to e-commerce to real estate to manufacturing, the McGlon's businesses were profitable, debt-free, and in six different industries (transportation/supply chain, real estate, e-commerce, retail, manufacturing, and automotive). Under his ownership & leadership, one company was included in Inc 500/5000 for four straight years. McGlon continues to work with entrepreneurs through mentoring and establishing successful processes that made previous and current companies successful. Today, McGlon works with multiple individuals and start-ups from New York to California and is actively involved as an advisor, accredited investor, and entrepreneur-in-residence at Auburn University since 2015.
From his trucking companies to his e-commerce businesses, daily processes were established ensuring success at the employee and company level. A hallmark of Scott's business strategy is engaging every employee on daily benchmarks and KPI's utilizing proprietary software. This daily visibility allows every team member to observe & realize the correlation between employee effort and the business's bottom line. Most companies hide this information - Scott believes in making sure the "big picture" is understood and known throughout the organization.
Scott and Shannon enjoy speaking to business students and clubs about their entrepreneurial and business experiences. Scott believes in sharing both the good and bad within his entrepreneurial journey knowing the failures sometimes has just as much or more value than the successes. Scott's personality connects with students through his enthusiasm, practical stories and diverse experiences. The grit in creating businesses from concept without outside monetary resources yields a palpable tenacity and optimism to make great ideas into realities. This is an encouraging, inspiring, and motivating concept for college students who have their eye on one day owning their own business.
The McGlon's are 100% self-made entrepreneurs that did it "the right way" in multiple industries and multiple economic landscapes. Establishing processes that work, developing proprietary software, driving operational efficiencies, and mentoring employees allowed a high-level of success in all of their businesses. It is rare to see entrepreneurs so willing to face adversity with character, tenacity, and ethics - in both successful and challenging times. The McGlon's have done so and thrived by standing firm on solid business and their faith-based principles.
